Historic Step in the Blue Homeland: Underwater Work Begins for the Türkiye-TRNC Natural Gas Pipeline!
Seismic and underwater research vessels are charting the course for a giant project that will reshape energy dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean. Targeting 2028, a new milestone is being reached for the TRNC's energy supply security.

A historic stage has been reached in the natural gas pipeline project planned between Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is set to radically alter the island's energy future. Following the NAVTEX (notice to mariners) issued for underwater and seismic studies in the Mediterranean, exploration and research vessels took action to examine the seabed at designated coordinates.
A 97-Kilometer Line Under the Sea Under the project, the pipeline designed to ensure uninterrupted natural gas flow from Türkiye to the TRNC is planned to be 101 kilometers long in total. A full 97 kilometers of this giant pipeline will pass along the seabed, within the borders of the Blue Homeland. Following Oruç Reis's seismic surveys, fully equipped research vessels deployed to the region will examine the topographic and geological structure of the seabed in detail at 12 critical coordinates along the route.
Target 2028: TRNC's Energy Independence to Become Sustainable Experts and officials state that engineering works will gain momentum following seabed surveys and seismic data collection. Following feasibility, environmental impact assessment, and pipe-laying processes, the project is expected to be completed and commissioned in 2028.
Upon completion of this pipeline, it is aimed to provide a fundamental solution to the TRNC's chronic energy and electricity generation cost issues. The arrival of affordable and environmentally friendly natural gas on the island will create a multiplier effect across all sectors, from TRNC industry to tourism, agriculture, and household budgets.
Geopolitical Activity and Reaction from the South This strategic move in the Mediterranean has also stirred geopolitical waters in the region. In response to this decisive step taken in cooperation between Türkiye and the TRNC, it was reported that the Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA) and Greece are attempting to make representations before the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) to block the project. However, Ankara and Nicosia stressed that "no step back will be taken regarding sovereign rights in the Blue Homeland and the legitimate interests of the TRNC," announcing that work will continue according to schedule.
